The management of my apartment complex continues to request that I do something about the "clutter" in my apartment, insisting that I have too much stuff. The lease specifically states that such things are considered violations of the lease if, a) they endanger the health or safety of the tenant, or b) they violate city housing ordinances. I asked for specifics, and I was told egress through the windows needs to be clear and accessible. I asked which egress she considered to be problematic and she gestured toward one egress through an exterior window, and after discussion it was decided that a book shelf was narrowing the egress of 4-5' feet by 6" too much. I asked her if that was the only issue with regards to the egresses, and she suggested the bedroom egress through its window was a problem. I walked her into the bedroom and requested she point out specifically what the issue was, whereupon she agreed that there was no issue with the bedroom. Having narrowed specifics down to that one book shelf, I asked if there were any other specific issues. She went back to vague assertions about "clutter" claiming that my having the amount of stuff in the bedroom that I have was unacceptable because if there were a fire in the bedroom, the fire would have to burn itself out. After some stern words about the unacceptably vague criteria she was using, and my suggesting that her bias in the matter was not acceptable, she said that she'll contact the inspector, that he'll come next week, she signed my inspection sheet, noting conditions were poor, and left.

I consider this little more than rank harassment. So now I need to clean things so the appearance of clutter is minimized, document it with a camera, familiarize myself with the building codes, and wait patiently for an inspection which I just know is not going to happen due to "unforseen circumstances" next week. This, in addition to reading 600 pages and getting a media server PC ready. I'm going to go to the tenant's union on Monday or Tuesday and solicit some advice on the matter. This is bullshit.

And now I'm too mad to concentrate on reading.

The last time she visited, I mentioned that I might be getting a 55 gallon aquarium. She implied that my doing so might be a lease violation, akin to that associated with water beds. She said she didn't remember anything specific off the top of her head, but she'd look into it. Today she comes and tells me she hasn't found anything in "black & white." I pointed out the tenant's handbook states that the housing of animals was not allowed (*rawr*), but that "small aquariums" were permissible. She stated she was unsure just what "small" meant in that context, and I told her she needed to make a decision in the matter, she agreed, and noted it on her phone.

This is the pattern. They make vague, unspecified complaints about the conditions in your apartment, if you ask for specifics, they demur, change the subject, or say they'll have to get back to you. It's simply a policy of harassment. And it's ongoing because when my apartment was first inspected in mid-October, it wasn't in acceptable condition. However, since that time, they've continued with the vague complaints, and repeated follow up inspections. This is going to stop.
