Maybe it's because the turret was small, and they wanted an anti-personnel weapon facing rearward, but because of the lack of room and the need to load the turret from the rear, they had to shift the machine gun off center.

That would make sense, it is kinda small, thinking about it Well, that solves that one then.

Just finished planting about 50 metres of Agapanthus around the fence line.
My neighbour had a fence put in and had to dig out half of his so I got them for free.
Purple and white flowered.
They'll put on a great show next year.
I thought it would take me a couple of hours but it took me six.
Now I'm stuffed. :-)

It's not even field modification, their tanks came off the production line with these machineguns mounted in such a strange way.
Like this?

Seems pretty obvious why they'd do that.
Navy guy, amirite?
No sane infantryman wants to be anywhere near the business end of one of those. The MG, no matter where it is located, is primarily an anti personnel weapon. You put the gun where the infantry are, which ain't on the front end of the tank unless they're very dumb.

But at the same time, on the I-Go, the tank i specified (Rather than that Chi-To) , the machinegun is facing off to the left of the turret, at a 45 degree angle, which surely is less effective than say one that is just rear facing? It gives too much room for infantry assault on the right hand side of the turret.

There's a really good reason they don't make em like that anymore.

P.S. the assumption those designs is that tanks never operate alone (and they don't, not even main battle tanks) and that you will always have someone to cover your flank, except the guy way out on the flank. I don't thinknthey thought infantry to the rear was a significant design error, and at that time it probably wasn't. Warfare changes.

That's always true, i guess. I overlooked that slightly, as japan didn't have the production power to actually produce enough I-Go tanks to be used like that
