Yarp... I'm obsessed with it now and soaking it up like a sponge... and when I'm not busy soaking it up like a sponge I'm obsessed with finding better ways to soak it up like a sponge first there was making a website, but it was too slow and awkward, then came mind maps, which though hierarchical in a sense, do not allow for much interconnectivity of ideas on different 'branches'... so that was out, then came 'concept maps' which were much better because they have that interconnectivity and thus can be used to represent context, which is what I wanted but can be a little bit messy, especially when a lot of ideas are in play, and finally my little database, which basically takes that interconnectivity and centralises it for better organisation (ie I can do all my work for this course... and philosophy in general... in this one file... though I am happy to still use the concept maps for smaller ideas/summaries and revision, and pen and paper for middle-of-the-night thoughts/rough work that can later be transferred to the database if I want).
db design tangent (giving you the benefit of hide tags because you know how I tend to go off on one when talking about neural networks? well I'm the same about software/database design, so imagine what I'm like when talking about software based on neural networks ):
Anyway, the database bends the rules of relational database design a little bit by introducing a many to many relationship allowing 'nodes' to be associated with other nodes, and thus allowing for the equivalent of neural contexts... any node can be associated with any other, and each one is the top of its own hierarchy, so limitless associations of ideas can be made, so each argID (argument (node)) can associate with any number of other argIDs, with each association having a seq[uence] number, used for ordering the arguments (and which you can change to change the order of content within an argument to whatever you want... and multiplying by -1 can set to a negative number that retains its order value for when you want to flip it back so that you can hide arguments from display, by having a where condition that only shows arguments with a positive sequence number... a little idea I added so that I could hide rough work... previous drafts etc... when no longer needed but still keep them within the database and in the same logical place in case I ever needed to see my full working again) within a given higher argument (the higher argument in this sense being what I'd consider the post-synaptic neuron that is associating the neurons below it and where the seq number can be likened to the synapses on the dendrites of that post synaptic neuron). And each lower argID being associated with a higher argID in the above case is encased in an intermediate table giving it an instance ID such that it can be used as a placeholder for inserting immediate content (ie could be likened to the immediate sensory input into a neural network) into the flow of an argument at any point (ie any sequence number... synapse) if its argID is set to the same ID of the parent... so here nodes can be self-referential and if that's the case, they can be likened to the branching of the dendrite (seq number) to accommodate any amount of immediate content (the actual text of arguments, comments etc... associated with the placeholder in the same way as args are with other args, and with their own seq numbers for those associations). As such an argument could come out looking like this: higher argID = a, associated with argID b on seq = 1, argID c on seq = 2, argID a (self referential for associating immediate content) on seq = 3 with say three entries associated with that placeholder... which I think I'll call a branchID... thus being for the sake of the query ordering, the equivalent of saying 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, argID d on seq = 4 etc.
Anyway I'm so glad I managed to do this (approximate neural contexts in a db) because I've been wanting to for a long time but didn't think it would be feasible in a relational database. I've made other useful software based on nodes, but it's never quite made the cut for me because of the same problems as mind maps... which represent their data the same way (or at least 'iMindMap' does)... too flat... you can have as many branches as you want, all stemming off root nodes, but no real interconnection between branches which is not good enough if you want to reuse data in different contexts, as a neural network does. But this db solves those problems so I'm well chuffed
So anyway, when I'm not either learning about philosophy or trying to improve my learning about philosophy, I'm just thinking about philosophy and working on my own theories So I'm well and truly plugged in to the philosophy matrix and so yes I'd love to talk to you about it... not right now... got a Shameless USA to watch now before bed... but are you still watching handegg with Tibs?
