What's everyone up to right now?

It's Saturday, so it's dive day for me - got to hang out with an octopus for quite awhile   In my experience, octopodes don't often like divers around.  She eventually got tired of us and left.  A large pod of bottlenose dolphins followed our boat for a bit, another treat.

I am envious.  I have never been diving and at this late date, never will.  But I used to love the times I was able to go out to the Gulf Stream with my grandfather and later my uncle.  Being in the midst of a pod of pilot whales is a great memory as is the time a hammerhead swam next to the boat so close to the surface that just a little water was flowing over its back.  I was so mesmerized that I didn't go grab my camera (this was pre cell phone days).

One fond memory I have of the Navy was when I was topside for once (I worked in the bowels of the ship) We were launching aircraft, which requires 30+ knots. There must have been about 150 dolphins surfing in our wake. They were having a grand old time! An absolutely beautiful experience.

Dad was in the Navy and that's how he met my mother.  He was stationed on the Outer Banks on a base that's been decommissioned.  He actually helped build it in his capacity as a SeaBee.  I was born in the infirmary there.  Dad spent almost no time on a Navy ship but granddaddy owned two deep sea fishing boats so when he could, dad mated for him and for other captains and he loved it.  One of my favorite pictures of dad is of him (as a very thin young man) running the marlin flag up on a boat he was mating on.  He went from farm boy to deep sea fisherman.

Watching the esteemed documentary The Truman Show. I’m about halfway through and the thing that’s really surprising me is that I remembered there being more scenes of Christoph. But so far, it’s just the one clip from the beginning. Maybe they’re all just clustered in the second half.
