Michelle Obama says to drink water - conservatives get outraged

She talks a lot about increasing water consumption - we know water is the best drink for us, but simply drinking an extra glass of water has no clear scientific benefits. If she talked solely of drinking water instead of other crap, she'd be good.

That being said, it's not a huge deal and the Republicans are dickheads.

Yea I think she being the first lady should have consulted more scientists/doctors before starting this. Since obviously if she endorsed something that does have a benefit on health that would be time better spent.

She probably could have been clearer, but I think the implication is "drink one more glass of water while drinking one less glass of Mountain Dew/Wild Irish Rose/Melted butter".

Uhm ... many people don't know this, but the drink 7 glasses a day is a myth. Everybody needs different amounts of water. Just drink when you're thirsty is the way to go, drinking too much doesn't get you healthier, you just go to the washroom more. If I'm not mistaken that is the scientific consensus now. Because our body does regulate water levels, drinking more water will require your body get rid of it otherwise it'd cause electrolytes imbalance, that doesn't happen, you just go to the washroom.

If she said drink more water instead of soft drinks/energy drinks/beer/whatever, then yea she'd be right, but unless people are suffering from dehydration, drinking is just that, no magic powers.

Checked this out a few years ago and found an article from the original scientist promoting water. Can't remember where the article is, but the man stated that his claim of drinking 64 ounces of water per day was blown out of proportion. His findings included all of the water consumed within the food we eat.

I mean, seriously, people are getting outraged by the first lady recommending people drink water. It can't be that far before we get to the point that people ask us to use soft drinks for everything but toilet water. The Idiocracy reference is inevitable.

The ellipses concerned me, it looks as though the part where the doctor explains exactly why it's not very scientific has been omitted. And what is 'this' which the Dr is referring to?

If we click the politico link to find the Dr's quote and get the context we find that he is in fact talking about the 'drink more water' campaign's claims of water being our original energy drink and that he is one of the experts concerned about the way the campaign is being framed.

Though it seems that the same ellipses exist in this article, what is presumably in those ellipses is given and summarised in paragraphs immediately after.

This forward progressives writer ('journalist'? i've got no idea what this organisation actually is) has misquoted Dr Goldfarb, misrepresented his arguments, and proceeded to mock his straw man creation. While linking to the very article and quote that proves he's as full of shit as it's possible to be whilst still being made up of mostly water. I award him no points.

But that's not the main point of the article. The main point is about conservative's reactions to the campaign (for my part I predict that it's going to be a lame waste of money as usual, which will try to make water 'hip' but just make everybody cringe), and we get anonymous forum posts on The Daily Caller and a tea party websites as proof, it's not the articles on those pages, it's the comments section, and not a closed comments section as the most recent comment on the tea party site is:

I already drink plenty of water, eat right, recycle, and keep my thermostat in check because I choose to do so and like to do so.
