Atheist superheroes?

Atheist superheroes?
Interesting. How do we all feel about this?

Quote:The title will center around a group of hardcore atheists who protect mankind from the supernatural threats that they do not believe in.

On the one hand, the nerdy teen in me can't help but love the concept, but on the other it sort of feels... off. Almost Flat Earth Atheist territory. I mean, our position isn't about obstinately not believing in things that do exist, after all.

I dunno, I'd have to read it first, which I do intend to do sometime. It could just be that the protagonists disbelieve in what the monsters are represented as being, in which case... that's actually really fucking awesome. Big Grin

Anyway, atheist superheroes! Yay! Tongue

Eek. Something is off with this concept, but I'm too tired to place it.

Odd though...I just was woke from a sound sleep. My dream was about super heroes...a first! Unfortunately my super power was the ability to make people spontaneously combust. WTF? What kinda good guy can utilize the powers of murder by immolation to preserve truth, justice and the American way? (Answer: this guy, apparently. Big Grin)

Oh, and don't get me started on my costume. 'Captain Combustion' likes to wear felt pieced together from a craft store rummage sale. Oy.

Minor derail or major tragedy? Tune in tomorrow for the no doubt unexciting conclusion!

Bugger.

Now there's a strange concept... atheists fighting the very things which they do not believe exist in the first place...

From what I've read, it seems as though the creatures themselves do exist, but instead of literally being angels and demons and whatnot, they're extradimensional beings capitalizing on the mistaken assumptions of the faithful in order to accomplish their goals.

It's a kind of cosmic con-job they're fighting, rather than something as nonsensical as it initially sounds. Tongue

The weird thing is that most comic book universes are crowded with gods, in which case there shouldn't be any atheists. I recall an issue of Iron Man where Tony Stark claims to be an atheist, and I was wondering about that. Tony Stark regularly partners with a god. And he's probably been to at least a couple of versions of heaven and hell. He's battled at least one or two versions of the Devil. He has encountered the beings that created the universe he lives in. But he's... an atheist???
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

That's what they essentially are anyway?

If you like, but my point is that their source isn't divine; they're claiming to be angels, capitalizing on the raw belief of the religious, without actually being sent from heaven or anything, because within the bounds of the fiction there doesn't seem to be one.
