You don't have to simply accept your lot in life. Sure, there are things beyond our control, but we have the ability to change a lot of things about our lives.
Not believing in god doesn't mean you have to simply just endure whatever life throws at you without the ability to shape your life. It means that you're free to find your place in the world as you see it and not have your life dictated to you by some outside entity.
