Quite a lot of money too, the popular ones. There are also competitions with cash prizes for some multiplayer games that require a lot of skill.
That sounds excellent. Kudos to those players. I'm sure history will remember them as a great human talent and a benefit to all mankind.
I do however wonder what the percent of winners is in comparison to the total amount of world wide gamers? .0000001% perhaps?
Just a thought.
Another thought you might wish to consider: sometimes going for simple entertainment, in order to escape the day-to-day stresses or ennui of life, is not necessarily a useless thing.
Also, since when are we required to benefit all mankind? And since that is your standard, can you show specifically what you have done in that regard?
Or, alternatively, you could go easy on the sanctimony.

Again, if we're going to be sanctimonious like the fell you're quoting above, then every book, movie, and TV show ever, no matter how entertaining and well made, would be similarly useless.
Luke: You don't believe in the Force, do you?
Han Solo: Kid, I've flown from one side of this galaxy to the other, and I've seen a lot of strange stuff, but I've never seen *anything* to make me believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything. 'Cause no mystical energy field controls *my* destiny. It's all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.

As a musician myself, it's often seemed to me that the only thing my bands did at gigs was help people get away from the stresses of real life.
That may not help all mankind, but it surely is doing someone a good turn, y'know?

Is this thing really going the route of which hobbies are superior to others? If so that's just hilarious..

Hardcore gamers need a new word.

Tangential reply.
My wife plays Candy Crush on Facebook. I nearly shit myself laughing when I first saw this advertisement.

I agree. I would hardly call someone that plays Kim Kardashian: whatever that game is and Candy Crush gamers. It's not like you need a shitbucket to be good at those.
Edit: Speaking of shitbuckets... The person I play BF with just got handed a 5 year ban from EA Stiv for pointing out people aren't going to want to buy/play Hardline if they don't do a better job of regional server support. They didn't even lock the thread. It was deleted like it had never existed.
