I think death is beautiful.

RE: I think death is beautiful.
I do not think death is beautiful, it is what it is. I do not fear it either. What I fear is how I will die. Hopefully as painless and the least humilitiating as possible

I honestly don't find death itself beautiful, and I wouldn't even if I became a theist again. Life can certainly be beautiful, and maybe that's where, when reflecting upon life and the realization of one's inevitable end, we find beauty. The realization that this may be one's only opportunity to do anything can bring upon one a very powerful reaction.
I've wanted to read what existential philosophers had to say on death for some time now. Maybe I'll go do that before bed. Seems as good a time as any to contemplate philosophically and (if I'm lucky) poetically. Smile

The fact of our mortality is fiercely beautiful. The implementation of it, less so.

As with many things, it seems. Ah, it seems idealism and realism clash even outside of metaphysics. Wink

...Man, I can't help but come off dorky when making philosophy jokes. xD

I rather think that it is the living that makes life so valuable.

I realize I should read all of the previous posts before responding so I am not repeating something that was already said however there are just too many of them...so here's my opinion.

The idea of death can be romanticized - I do it myself. I too see death as a (someday) nice release from the tensions and responsibilities and mental work of this world. At the same time, I have seen more death firsthand than many people have. It's not pretty. It's not easy. It's not romantic. It's not drifting peacefully off. It's a body struggling to continue existing. It's lungs not getting enough oxygen, a brain recoiling against the lack of nutrients, etc. The best we can hope for is that our bodies are undergoing that process unconsciously when the time comes.

Scared shitless. I don't want to leave my people's. I'm sure they will get along just fine without me but I'm a control freak. I want to walk my daughter down the aisle but I'm terrified of not being there to look after her when life slaps her about (as it inevitably will).
