I agree with the article (crazies on both the left and the right will always try to control a party's agenda), but I have to take exception to the title of your post.

I had to check the date on that article to make sure it's recent. Conservative groups have been controlling the Republican party for years, otherwise in 2012 we wouldn't have seen Bachmann, Perry, or Santorum anywhere near a presidential campaign.
But that's what passes for journalism on Yahoo.
