It's a cultural thing. I also use a messenger bag on a daily basis. But this one is a real bicycle messenger bag and comes equipped with a body strap so that the bag doesn't swing around while you are riding. The strap is easy to tuck out of the way if you are not cycling.
But it isn't a whole lot different than a shoulder bag, aside from having been designed with cyclists in mind. They are quite popular around here with the local non-cycling hipster/yuppie crowd.
We've a rather large southeast asian community that resides quite near where I live, and I've noticed that the men in said community are much given to using bags that are highly decorated fabric bags, with long fringes on the bottom. In my old Brooklyn 'hood these would have been considered feminine accessories by most of my neighbors. But these guys wives do not use these bags, only the guys do! Like I said, it's cultural. However, bags such as these guys are using would have been carried by the local hippies, male and female. Guess I've gone and dated myself, lol.
It's really silly, as I see it, all this genderization of inanimate objects. (Is there even such a word?)
