Sometimes, you stay "faithful" because leaving it means having to view life entirely differently than you once did. I realized the Bible was bs a while ago but it took a few more years after that realization to have the courage to denounce it for good, if only to myself.
Exactly. Also, I never accepted the Old Testament, or much of the New Testament - other than parts of the gospels. But that had to eventually go as well.

I'd be interested in your studies
If I were to create self aware beings knowing fully what they would do in their lifetimes, I sure wouldn't create a HELL for the majority of them to live in infinitely! That's not Love, that's sadistic. Therefore a truly loving god does not exist!
Quote:The sin is against an infinite being (God) unforgiven infinitely, therefore the punishment is infinite.
Dead wrong. The actions of a finite being measured against an infinite one are infinitesimal and therefore merit infinitesimal punishment.
Quote:Some people deserve hell.
I say again: No exceptions. Punishment should be equal to the crime, not in excess of it. As soon as the punishment is greater than the crime, the punisher is in the wrong.

Yes - but Aldarion is fine also - or Alda, TA, or T & A...... whatever.

Well, they do come in very handy when debating fundies (which I've been doing for many years). They will not listen to logic and reason, but when I debate them on their own playing field, they eventually run and hide in the locker room because they inevitably get backed into a theological corner. The ones who stay and fight resort to knee-jerk defensive posturing, and end up attacking me personally. It's happened thousands of times over many years, and they think I'm Satan's personal assistant.

I wish I had a knee jerk response from people. Mostly I just get "well aren't you cute".
I'm specifically interested in the origins of the Bible and as a side project I am looking up the Biblical prophecy factor.

Another old fogie and a scholar. Yes! Be warned, all you young whipper-snappers, our numbers are growing!
Greets, mate. "Experienced man walking!"
(Apologies in advance if this allusion is not appropriately gender specific.)

When you say "Biblical prophecy factor" - do you mean - 'All of the biblical prophecies that never happened'?

yes. and why my dad believes that the prophecies that did come true are proof positive for gods existence. he's a big fan of Revelations and seems to be obsessed with death.

I don't know for sure, but from what you have said, I have a hunch that your dad probably subscribes to the popular theology known as dispensationalism eschatology - which originated in the mid-1800's by John Nelson Darby - further popularized by C.I. Scofield. It is a clever way to fudge and explain away all of the unfulfilled prophecies in the bible. That is why there are 40,000 different denominations (literally) and thousands of different interpretations. They all have different ways of making excuses for the same exact problem - all of the biblical predictions and prophecies that didn't come to pass. If these prophecies did come to pass as the bible said they would - there would be no need for all of the different interpretations and divisions - and no need for the relatively new theology known as dispensationalism. Currently, almost all Protestants and many Catholics subscribe to this theology. It's a very convenient system. They refuse to accept reality, so they claim that almost everything is still in the future. I call it, CYA Theology.

Hmmm!
So how about one specific prophecy? Jesus' life and death?
or off the top of my head and a big deal to my dad: Israel becoming a nation?
