Isn't that rather a gross over-generalization? I'm not sure it's fair to characterize a person of 'weak character' for engaging in a fight, unless you know what the fight is about in the first place.

For instance, suppose you see a woman getting thumped about by her husband or boyfriend. Is it a sign of 'weak' character to wade in and attempt to stop it?

No, not a generalization at all. I DID know what every fight was about and since I was talking about myself, I'd say it's entirely fair.
Furthermore, that example you offered is EXTREMELY rare and you and I both know that 99% of fights are avoidable and certainly have absolutely nothing to do with protecting someone's honor. To imply that there's a hero factor that has to be calculated in is absurd and utterly dishonest.

... No.. really I've often wondered why guys do such rude things.

No - some guys just assume that women have to play hard to get, but really are just out there to be groped.

And some get drunk and assume that women will love it when they grope them.

And some just don't care or think past the groping to realize consequences.

They were, and are, awesome, but that's not why he did it. I could tell he'd done it to a bunch of women before me, and he'd do it to a bunch of women after me, and it wasn't anything about me except that I was a woman passing by. He was a black-hearted misogynistic shithead, so I punched him, and got lucky and hurt him. I've never regretted it. I DID regret getting handcuffed for it, but enough time has passed now that it's just a good story.

You're not hanging around enough drunk older women.

I've heard some shitty things from my guy friends and acquaintances about older women who were drunk (or not) and initiating unwanted physical contact. They say all kinds of horrible things that play on the stereotypes on how guys always want it, etc.

People just shouldn't touch other people without consent.

I need to start volunteering at an old folks home then. Do octogenarian widows like malt liquor?

Naw, I agree. I can do without the paddyfingers and assume others feel the same.

I've never had a reason to hit anyone since high school (secondary school)

But then I used to find the whole fighting thing embarrassing, with people gathering round and chanting "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT"

If I was annoyed with someone I'd usually just calmly but powerfully deliver one huge precise kick to the shins, I used to wear shoes with very sharp edges and every time they wouldn't be able to walk to be able to retaliate after.
This was much less hassle than fighting.

I think I avoid fighting now by not going out to places where people drink or drinking myself, my arguments now pretty much go to the extent of slightly raised voices.

Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.

Impersonation is treason.

I fight when I was a kid. Quite a lot. Grew up in a village, we played outdoors, you know, the wild little things that used to run around before everyone owned a computer. Didn't fight like "I want to kill you!" fight, just kick some boys, don't remember what for. They never reciprocate. I never seriously tried to hurt anyone, when I was a child it was just just having fun, we used to play pretty rough games.

Now I do not fight, and I don't like fighting, I don't like guys who fight, unless it's self defence/defending others then all that is out the window and you can fight as much as you like. (Punching someone who gropes you qualifies as self defence in my book)

I think this calls for a fist fight. Angel Get at it, men! Oh wait, darn, it's the internet.

It's rare, but not too rare. By that I don't mean medium rare like steak. What I'm saying is that when I did fight, back in junior high and early high school, it was really to defend my little brother. He has Tourette syndrome and kids thought it was funny to bully him around. Absurd, perhaps, but true.

I've never been in a real fight, but I've thrown two punches. I could lash out if pushed enough when I was a little tyke. One of those punches bloodied the nose of a kid twice my size when I was nine, and the other one knocked two teeth out of another kid's mouth at summer camp when I was eight.
