Fisticuffs

RE: Fisticuffs
My son is a little me.

One time I walked outside to see what he was up to. I saw him standing between his 8 year old uncle and a crew of kids from the block. My son is seven. Oh wait... this was last year, so...

Anyway, My son was waving a brick around at the kids while his little uncle was sitting on the floor covering his head. My son was defending him from the pack of kids. Tongue Apparently his uncle is too fat to play with the rest of them for that day.

Also, a few weeks ago I got told by the school that he got in a fight. Turns out some kids were calling a boy a faggot for singing a girly song and my son defended him. He saw a kid pushing the singer kid and my son intervened. I asked the teacher if this is how it really happened and the teacher agreed.

Other than that, nope. No fights. He's clean.

Mostly I say I'm a wrestler because I'm not a physical person unless pushed to such. And only one person as yet has pushed me that far. Any other bullshit in my life I felt I didn't need to be physical. My wits avoided trouble more than they ever got me into it.

Quote:No, not a generalization at all. I DID know what every fight was about and since I was talking about myself, I'd say it's entirely fair.

Then you should have made it more clear that you were talking only about yourself. The phrase 'That's a sign of a weak person' indicates you were talking about people in general.

Quote:Furthermore, that example you offered is EXTREMELY rare and you and I both know that 99% of fights are avoidable and certainly have absolutely nothing to do with protecting someone's honor.

Firstly, I wouldn't use the phrase 'extremely rare', but I agree the situation isn't frightfully common. Be that as it may, it was simply an example meant to show that not every engagement in fisticuffs is a sign of weakness.

And even in the admittedly uncommon situation described, it isn't always about someone's honour - it is sometimes about someone's safety. And I notice you avoided answering my question.

Quote:To imply that there's a hero factor that has to be calculated in is absurd and utterly dishonest.

But it is obviously does occur, both in the defense of others and in the defense of one's self. There clearly are situations where not walking away is a sign of greater, not lesser, character.

This isn't to say that ALL fights are justified - some of my own clearly weren't. But your contention (implied, not overt) that responding with violence is ALWAYS a sign of weakness is '...absurd and utterly dishonest.'

In college I was watching an anti-war demonstration with my economics prof and another professor and there was a bit of a dust up. The other prof, a Chinese guy about 5 feet tall and 95 pounds went wading into it to try to break it up and I went after him to save his life. Some guy hit me in the head with a Viet Cong flag. I didn't care about the flag was I was a little pissed about the flag pole so I gave him a right to the kidney and grabbed the Chinese guy with my left and pulled him back out of the crowd.
I don't know why but I found this hilarious.
Personally I've never been in a fight with anyone, I just haven't been in a situation that demanded it. In secondary school I pretty much stuck to my group of friends and since I'm pretty normal (sounds bad, but it's true), I didn't get bullied at all.

Our creed states "As long as the flag is not desecrated, and the national symbols are not slandered, no fist shall be raised".

As such, I only actively take part in fights that fit the creed.
Other than that, in times when I myself am challenged to a fight, I oblige, but only in an arranged location with witnesses.
I have challenged someone to a personal fight only once, and I had been gravely insulted.

Never been in a fight.

The Sicilian in me has raised his voice a couple times, though. Sometimes in disagreement, sometimes just for the hell of it.

RE: Fisticuffs
I did wing chun for about 3/4 years when I was younger (mid teens), mainly for wanting to do a martial art and that I wanted to keep healthy.

I've never used it, and never been in a fight per se. Been in plenty of mosh pits, but even the really violent ones have been good natured.

When it comes to war and conflict I would definitely say I'm a pacifist. But I have no hesitation in getting involved in a verbal brawl when it comes to debates, online or in RL.
