On the subject of the cross, that one has always confused me as well.

Bill Hicks did a fantastic sketch on that. He theorised that the crosses were the reason for the delay In the second coming, on the basis that the last thing he'd want to see when he came back was a bunch of pictures of him being brutally killed.
