God damn.

I've actually heard it's best to stay with your pet when they put them down, because the pet gets scared. I wonder if I should have stayed, but I just didn't think about it. The vet lady didn't ask.

I experienced putting a pet down for the first time about three years ago. Before that my dad took them to the vet without the family (though we had one unexpected death that was shocking), but with Mo that wasn't really an option given that we were all home and I was the one holding him when he... well, did the thing that necessitated the decision to put him down. Let's just say it was a traumatic experience. Undecided

I have three dogs, two parrots, and a new kitten. Half of the crew were rescues. They consist of a Rat Terrier/Chihuahua mix, a male and a female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, an African Gray, a Quaker, and a snowshoe Siamese. I may as well have my checks sent to PetSmart.

On the other hand, Labs always seem to want to be on your lap or the couch.

We have three begals. I would post pics but I haven't quit figured that one out yet.

I had to put one down a few years ago myself. (Meaning we went to the vet.) that was a horrid experience. Zoey had back cancer and was in tremor does pain. When it was time the vet brought in 4 vials of hot pink liquid and started to inject them as soon as that stuff hit her blood stream she began to wine and thrash around. That was the most she moved in a month. The vet went through all three vials and had to go get more. Zoey tried to come to use but was getting groggy and was stumbling and falling down... It took forever before she died a horrid death.

My only other experience was when my dad made me "old yeller" my cat after it had been side swiped by a car. That was much more humane. I put my cat on the ground took ten steps back aimed and pulled the trigger. It was like someone turned off a light switch. My cat was meowing in great pain, and then boom he was instantly dead.

From now on that is how I will do it.

We have a dog (german shepherd/akita cross) and 2 cats, also up to 30 "paying guests" (my wife runs a boarding cattery, the furry beasties pay my bills!)

Dang Drich. You'd think they'd use something that would put the animal to sleep a lot faster than that. I hope my dog didn't suffer too much when I left him. I guess it's too late to worry about it now, though. That was years ago.
