this is an honest question and I'm generally curious.

Christianity has been aggressively pushed by its believers and all competing faiths ruthlessly suppressed since 300ad most other religions just aren't that into expansion in the same way. Male converts to Judaism even have to have the end of their dong chopped off which is not exactly making it easy to join them.

No one wrote about him when he was alive. There's no evidence of the exodus of the old testament. You can't say the events are grounded in the physical, because there's precious little physical evidence to be found.

Politics. Colonialism.

Basically this. You can attribute most of it to geo-politics in varying forms (initially) coupled with childhood/family indoctrination (now the primary tool) alongside more contemporary door-to-door annoyance etc. There are umpteen ways that religions (particularly christianity and Islam) perpetuate and propogate, but these are the primary tools. It helps if your religion uses rewards and punishments as incentive to obey certain rulings. The abrahamic faiths have pretty much nailed this, they use threats of violence and punishment (and not just in the afterlife) to enforce 'moral codes', rather than using pure reason to demonstrate why certain morals are beneficial to individuals and communities alike.

Good starting points for research would be to read about the the initial adoptions of christianity as the state religion in the roman empire (they basically appropriated it, turning it from minority cult in to state sponsored religion), followed by the history of European colonialism, particularly the Spanish and Portugese adventures in to South/central America, and the British and French adventures in to North America. The colonisation of Africa by European powers is also important reading material too.

But in a sentence, basically: European powers - Colonialism/Slave trade - splintering and adaptation to the new world - adaptation to local environment (including the theft and appropriation of local, pre-christian traditions the world over).

thanks for the replies guys. I guess there's also the fact that just because it's popular doesn't mean it's true

All religions are equally true. Nil equals nil.

Exactly.

Appealing to the popularity or tradition of a belief does not offer a shred of evidence that the belief is any more true than less popular beliefs.

Only demonstrable evidence, reasoned agument and valid/sound logic should be used as the criteria to justify belief in a claim.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

I would think that a 'true' religion would be compatible with human nature instead of trying to vilify and subvert it at every possible turn.

At least a religion in which the deity wants to be friends with you, instead of one who preaches love and kindness but really just wants servants.

Hinduism doesn't prosyletize. 800 million or so adherents without even trying to recruit more Hindus.
