In a world with no room left for God
January 25, 2014 at 12:12 pm
Hello,
Imagine a hypothetical future when CERN has completely explained how the universe came into existence, leaving no gap for God to fit into any more. What would religion be like at that point and what kinds of rationalisations would people with faith have?

What makes you think there's any room for a god now? Anyone claiming to believe in one is obviously making shit up with no proof to back their claim.
My prediction? People will still be willing to make up god claims. Sad but true.

Religions would act pretty much as they do now.
They don't let facts get in the way of their faith.

We already live in that world. The CERN scenario wouldn't change anything much. Religious hucksters would still point at the results and claim it's their god's fingerprints, and the rank and file would still lap it up without even attempting to question anything.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

I don't know what rationalizations they would use, but I believe the impetus behind faith would remain what it's always been: a deep-rooted need for meaning. Of course, we all have such a need in our lives, but religious believers tend to be so self-absorbed and vain as to believe that the world is but a stage upon which they -- faithful protagonists -- are central players in a cosmic drama of surpassing importance. No scientific explanation, however comprehensive it may be, will satisfy certain people, especially if it underscores the provisional nature of our existence -- our smallness and insignificance. In the end, there will always be people whose response to this is, "But what about me?"

Now imagine a world in which God came into the world to save...wait a minute, that already happened. Never mind.

Fair enough - I shan't mind.
