The US civil war was not about the federal government banning slavery at all. What is was about was Northern States demanding that southern cotton be processed in Northern mills and not exported directly to England who paid more money for it. The emancipation (and only for states in the confederacy, slaves in Northern territories weren't freed until later) weren't freed until later.
Some may call them junk, I call them treasures.
