Wow.

Some exceptional information there. I was not aware that the benefits of fruit were so diverse and potent. Obviously I knew they were good for me, and we have strawberries, bananas, grapes and blueberries most weeks, but that's staggering really.

Good stuff.

There is a warning though M/M...trust your body to know what it needs. If you don't like something then just maybe you don't need it?

With the exception of Tumeric, Garlic (Allium family) and the fruits I would tread very carefully and slowly with anything you may be introducing to your diet. Not that they are bad ...but is your particular metabolism up to the digestion challenge?

Ginger is ALWAYS good in moderate amounts and a variety of ways.

Zen loves Ginger Beer (non-alcoholic) Big Grin

Rule of thumb for growing your own

Don't know about here but for our Northern Hemispherian cousins...

I have posted this before....personally I am unable to live in a house without plants ..... so....

Quote:6 Air Purifying House Plants

1. Bamboo Palm: According to NASA, it removes formaldahyde and is also said to act as a natural humidifier.

2. Snake Plant: Found by NASA to absorb nitrogen oxides and
formaldahyde.

3. Areca Palm: One of the best air purifying plants for general
air cleanliness.

4. Spider Plant: Great indoor plant for removing carbon monoxide and other toxins or impurities. Spider plants are one of three plants NASA deems best at removing formaldahyde from the air.

5. Peace Lily: Peace lilies could be called the âclean-all.â
Theyâre often placed in bathrooms or laundry rooms because
theyâre known for removing mold spores. Also know to remove formaldahyde and trichloroethylene.

6. Gerbera Daisy: Not only do these gorgeous flowers remove
benzene from the air, theyâre known to improve sleep by absorbing carbon dioxide and giving off more oxygen over night.

Best thing I have found to remedy this "Man 'flu" thingy

I think I have a slight intolerance to some things and get the odd bout of IBS as a result.

This (as you have described) has gotten me into the whole .... food for sustainable health .... issue.

So, as the Zen Badger has often stated "IF you feel like eating it, then you can probably be assured that there is something in that your body needs at the moment"

Can't really fault his perspective here. BUT! IF there is some sort of "quick, short term cure all" it would have to be Scotch/ Whiskey .... from the common cold to mysterious "aches and pains" and DOMS. And when you really look into it alcohol is a muscle relaxant and a very good and efficient one at that.

Note bene: Alcohol is NOT a cure ALL! In fact nothing is. But for short term relief .... you can have a dram of Scotch/ Whiskey as have 500mg - 1000mg of paracetamol with the same health effects.

You have to be careful when it comes to saying for example, kiwi fruit increased bone mass. If we take this one example, the studies done suggest that lower than recommended vitamin K intake = lower bone mass density in women but not men. So increasing vitamin K consumption by eating kiwi fruit will only have a proven effect if you aren't getting enough already and are a woman. A large study was done to test the effect of delaying the onset of osteoporosis by increased intake of vitamin K. It was unsuccessful in that regard, though did seem to reduce cancer rates http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles...po=2.00000.

A lot of this is down to very poor reporting of science by people in the media. It is actually fairly difficult to get to what the scientific data actually shows, and for someone without a background in science probably even harder to make sense of it all.

Fruit and Veg can be eaten to assure a good balanced diet and that you get enough of each vitamin etc.

Ben Goldacre's Bad Science book is pretty good when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Agreed Tony. IF you read my post carefully you would have found that exact same disclaimer in there.

Food is of assistance but is NOT a cure. Helpful but not a replacement for conventional medicine.

For Zen and me ... we are both fairly healthy and are only looking to ensure we get the vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre we need to maintain our current health.

I do find these jpegs/ gifs purporting "super-foods" to be a lie and "bad science, mostly supported via the "Health Industries"

I love my House plants, and yes they do contribute to the overall atmosphere of the house. Hence they are included here. There is an issue with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_af...e_disorder
Which I like to think my plants are helping to alleviate FOR ME and perhaps might help others affected.
