I enjoy fiction, but I've hated the bible so far. And I'm talking hatred on the scale of "I'd rather read the Twilight series again than read the bible." Undecided

Well atleast that is what I'm trying to do. I'm currently stuck in Leviticus and it's boring me so much. I'm thinking about skipping it. So any suggestions and/or tips.

I find it ironic that now that I'm an atheist, I'm actually trying to read the bible haha.

I suggest a Catholic Bible, such as the Common English Bible. You can access it on the internet. It contains several secular books that gives suggestions on how to deal with various life problems. It also has a very short book called "Susanna" that shows that the old Israelites were exactly like the Taliban of today.

And "Bel and the Dragon" is a nicely written detective story.

It shows how to investigate a BS story by using your mind and common sense.

I find it useful to search for a topic across several different versions. That way you can see how thinking evolved over time and the different versions can clarify cluttered language found in the King James version.

"The Skeptics Annotated Bible" also contains the Koran and the Book of Mormon.

"The Evil Bible" lists the bad things.

"The Brick Bible" presents the stories in cartoon form and it is very entertaining.

"Mohammed's Believe It Or Else" is a 24 page comic book about Mohammed. It's easy to read and contains Koran and hadith links to the pictures.

If you disregard all of the supernatural stuff in the Bible you will soon see that it uses the stories to present two opposing sides to various issues. It's up to the reader to decide if one of the viewpoints make sense to him.

I must say, lots of theists do this, and it's really annoying after a while. "If you didn't find god, you must not have been looking the right way." Often from the same people who believe that god is SO close that we can find him even if it's just by accident.

Either the Christian god does not exist, or he is a dick to humans.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Almost all Christians make two assumptions about the Bible which warp their perspective and prevent them from finding any real truth in it:

1. The Bible may (or may not) have metaphorical parts but the overarching narrative is definitely a true story
2. God is the good guy

Read it without those 100% unjustifiable assumptions in mind (don't even assume the opposite of those two things, just go in bareback) and you'll get a remarkably clear picture of how ugly and retrograde the belief system is.

It's really funny, I highly recommend checking it out (http://www.thebricktestament.com/home.html) but it's annotated... Undecided

Or just run the verses through gizoogle.

Joshua 1:9: Have I not commanded yo slick ass, biatch? Be phat n' courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, fo' tha LORD yo' Dogg is ghon be wit you wherever you go.”

Genesis 16:1: Now Sarai, Abram’s hoe, had borne his ass no lil' thugs. But dat freaky freaky biatch had a Egyptian slave named Hagar; 2 so her big-ass booty holla'd ta Abram, “Da Lord has kept me from havin lil' thugs. Go, chill wit mah slave; like I can build a cold-ass lil crew all up in her muthafuckin ass.”
