In which case i think it to be interesting that Mr. fr0d0 thinks that a 'spirit' can have a mind without having a brain Smile A mind is based upon a brain (or equivalent)... does a spirit have a brain, fr0d0? Or are you considering the 'soul' to be exactly what a 'mind' is, fr0d0?

I've said what I think the mind is. It's a product of the brain. I think your spirit is also your soul. It's a gutteral instinct. Something uncontrollable, yet access is facilitated by conscious thought. You think right, your are in harmony with your gut. You think wrong, your gut is twisted. Comprendez?

So you think the soul is responsible for instincts?

If the soul is instinct without mind then what does that make your afterlife? Your mind obviously can't be there if it's a product of the brain and the brain is now rotting flesh in a casket, so your persona, the individual ego is gone and dead;

Is it that homonculus thing again?? The part were free will necessarily resides? Where is the free will fr0d0, is it in the mind or in the soul?

Though I voted yes in the poll, I think the statement is not accurate. The brain is where the mind comes together. However, the total human body contributes to thought processes in the brain. The term thought processes also seems to leave out emotional feelings that clearly can have an origin outside the brain but in the human body and leave a mark on our thought. Antonio Damasio has formulated the so called somatic markers hypothesis to describe this.

I do indeed believe, on evidence, that the mind is within the brain.

If I were to be brain damage that effects my thinking... and I know of no evidence whatsoever that any of my thinking of anything a 'mind' does can be done outside of my brain or without it.

Ignorance is not a valid argument.

I think that the mind is the result of the brains actions.
The excell spreadsheet is not the computer but it does not exist outside of the computer.

When the computer is off the program would be lost. As all those who had a Sinclair ZX81 can testify.

QualiaSoup (awesome critical thinking channel) mentioned some things about the brain / mind connection in his latest video about Dualism:

I liked that video. I have no problem with it. Best I've seen of his so far. I think he's missing the philosophical point wanting to attribute consciousness to the soul/theoretical immortality. I find it ridiculous to assume sensual properties.

There is no free will. You are a free agent. Reasoning is done entirely in the brain.. the mind is within the brain.

I like that video. I think it is a good idea to get a different perspective on how the mind/brain works. The possibilities are probably endless!!

Please explain how we can be free agents without free will. Sound awesome.
