Quote: The policy of the emperors and the senate, as far as it concerned religion, was happily seconded by the reflections of the enlightened, and by the habits of the superstitious, part of their subjects. The various modes of worship, which prevailed in the Roman world, were all considered by the people, as equally true; by the philosopher, as equally false; and by the magistrate, as equally useful. And thus toleration produced not only mutual indulgence, but even religious concord.

Edward Gibbon, Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire Chapter II

De nada.

That quote is usually attributed to Lucius Annaeus Seneca but it appears in none of his writings. Apparently someone decided that Gibbon was not "important" enough to author it...kind of like how xtians attribute a lot of their fictional writings to "paul" because it sounds better than "Joe Schmuck."

Here's ten pro-humanist quotes which ought to make believers shit themselves:

1. 'Thou shalt not oppress a stranger.' Exodus 23:9

2. 'Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.' Leviticus 19:17

3. 'Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.' Psalms 34:13-13

4. 'Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.' Psalms 82:3-4

5. 'Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.' Proverbs 12:25

6. 'A man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry.' Ecclesiastes 8:15

7. 'Come now, let us reason together.' Isaiah 1:18

8. 'Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely.' Luke 3:14

9. 'He that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.' Romans 12:8

10. 'Let us not be weary in well doing.' Galatians 6:9

Quote:“Live a good life.

If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.

If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.

If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

Here's a goodie from Luke:

Luke 19:27 (CEV) = "Now bring me the enemies who didn’t want me to be their king. Kill them while I watch!”

Just a few that I like:

Quote:"They [preachers] dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of daylight and scowl on the fatal harbinger announcing the subversions of the duperies on which they live".
-Thomas Jefferson

"The mind—once enlightened—cannot again become dark."
-Thomas Paine

"Why should I fear death? If I exist, then death is not. If death exists, then I am not. Why should I fear that which cannot exist while I do?"
-Epicurus

"If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people."
-House

"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
-Stephen Roberts

"It's easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled."
-Mark Twain

Quote:6 [God] will render to each person according to his deeds ... 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.
