Religious Faith vs. Atheist Conviction

Absolutely not. To believe something for which there is no conclusive proof one way or the other is not crazy even if it isn't entirely rational. The thing is, none of us is entirely rational.

There are plenty of admirable, reasonable xtians and they don't shove it down everyone's throat. Some have a genuine respect for the right of others to choose for themselves. They at least deserve the same.

Hi frodo. Still lying by accusing people of doing something they don't do?

Not sure what's really confusing you here, sven. I'm sure the majority of religious people (especially evangelicals) show similar levels of conviction to your friend.

Is she a liar? Doesn't sound like it. Is she insane? Well obviously I believe she's suffering from a delusion, but I wouldn't go as far as that. She's one of many people who believes many untrue things, yet sounds like generally a charitable, normalish person. What's the great mystery?

Hi frodo. Still lying by accusing people of doing something they don't do?

What I can't ask for reasoning?

I have solid reasoning that convinces me to believe in God. Is that irrational or delusional?? I can't see that it is and so far no one has been able to find fault with it.

You in particular tor can't defend your position to me and yet you call me a liar? Your refusal to accept that I can deduce something to accept it seems like a delusional stance to me.

That would be the best argument you had tor.

I suppose I think this is mysterious because I seldomly have anything to do with people like her. I know plenty of people who believe in things, which I think are nonsense. Astrology, spirits, homeopathy, aura therapy, 12 step programs, and so on. But to me, that is not the same as her type of religious faith.
I actually don't think she would have a better life if she stopped believing in god, which is a little bothersome to me.

Unfortunately, some people can be quite rational in every part of their lives except for when it comes to religious beliefs. One of the things I abhor reading in books or seeing on television, especially, is when an otherwise intelligent and logical individual claims an irrational belief in a deity. It instantly makes me dislike the character.

I wouldn't call my atheism a 'conviction'. My atheism is a provisional position, and open to alteration if presented with evidence.

I find this very interesting. I never really thought about it -- I just always 'knew' that there was no God, that ghosts weren't real, and so on. When someone said to me that's called being an atheist, I started say I was an atheist. It had more to do with a feeling than anything else. But I am similar to you in a way, because if someone could prove to me that God existed, I would change my mind. Even though I am convinced that God does not exist. That's why I call it a conviction.
