Just to be different to most of the posters here.

I think the Catholic Church is promoting thinly disguised paganism.

1: The Virgin Mary was turned into the equivalent of a goddess. Even her title, Queen of Heaven, was originally given to pagan sky goddesses.

2: Pagans have a god or goddess for every occasion. Roman Catholics have a patron saint for every occasion.

What Are Patron Saints?

The article goes through the history of patron saints up to the Middle Ages when the practise had spread beyond churches to occupations and diseases.

They aren't supposed to be gods and goddesses, of course.

Perchance the insanity of the "perpetual virgin." Or the immaculate conception as it was applied to Mary, rather than Jesus?

Tell you what - have a stab at some of these and I'll line up another hundred or so issues for you to look forward to.

In the meantime, a question:

Does it seem reasonable to you that an organization that claims perfection, claims to have a hotline to god, claims to be the one true church and all that makes such a mess of everything down here on earth?

My post had nothing to do with the sex abuse scandals in the church. Let me repeat: NOTHING. I never mentioned it. I never even alluded to it.

Go back and read it if you don't believe me, it's post #88 on page 9.

And I, for one, don't "avidly hate" the church, or it's priests, bishops, cardinals, or the pope. That doesn't mean, though, that I don't think that a great number of them deserve to be thrown in jail for the rest of their lives for their complicity in the aforementioned sex abuse scandals and cover-ups.
