I do feel your pain in the team situation, I was never challenging leaderboards like you but we would still have a lot of people leave. Come to think of it that's what annoys me with COD the most. You spend more time looking for a good game lobby than actually playing in one.
It makes it so frustrating. One of the things I used to love about the series is that you could get a group of players together (Even complete strangers) and be playing almost non stop with a 1 min gap between games. Now playing in a group you are sat around doing nothing most of the night.
To me it seems like group/teamplay is dead in most FPS games. Other games like BF3/4 server admins will actually kick or split up people playing together. I had to make a 2nd XBL account for BF3 after being banned from most servers for being good or playing with friends/teams. I won't even get into how fucked it is trying to just play with friends on that.

Most of the fun of gaming for me was hanging out with random people and working together to win. That's just not a viable way to enjoy most games anymore. Now you get to sit in silence and run by teammates that don't give a single fuck about the result so long as they get a good KDr.
Closet I've come recently is probably Arma 3. The only game where I've bumped into players who actually want to have fun and co-operate with each other. With a few more bug's ironed out and a much better PC that might be where I go in future.
