I agree with you to a certain point Void. I too don't believe that Jesus was an historical figure but I believe that one that is truly responsible for elevating Jesus to the divine status that he is accorded today is good ole Saint Paul of Tarsus. The book of John speaks almost entirely in a spiritual context when it makes references to Jesus.

I don't deny Saul as the engine behind the popularity but all my research onto the topic has turned up the idea that Jesus was unknown till Peter the raving Jewish street preacher started to piss off the Temple with his proclamation that the Jewish messiah Emanuel came in the form of a man named Jesus whom he only ever described in court as a prominent star in the sky that talked to him...
