Shameless plug, hope you don't mind.
I have a poetry thread, for those who like atheist poetry, graciously hosted by Rational Responders website. 23 years of poetry. I hope you guys don't mind me linking it here. Not making a dime off of it for either the thread or that website.

I've done a bit of atheism-related poetry. Though, I write almost only sonnets and blank-verse.

Your form is a bit odd, but I kind of like it. Thanks for posting!
I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a goddess, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed

I get that a alot. But back in the early 90s, I belonged to a poetry group and one thing I learned quickly is that people in it cared more about the messages in them, than someone being a book learned technician. I don't pretend all of it is mind blowing, but there is enough there you will find something you like.

When I read the poetry of others, I can only say I like it or don't like it, but relegate it to a personal taste issue. I don't like being a critic, especially of style because you'd be amazed what people like. I am also often amazed at what people like of mine because sometimes it isn't what I expect.

But thanks man.

I like my boring style for the simple reason that it makes it easier for me to read. Andy Warhal(sp) Soup Can poetry you could call it. But while not comparing myself to Plath at all, I have book of her poetry and many of them have that same style.

I think the best way to write poetry is a lot like photography and even writing a paper in school, it isn't about getting it right at the start. It is about writing enough so you can go back and pick out the gems.

I am also not a fan of complexity and codedness of a poem being a standard. It still has a message and is meaningless if people don't get it. You can be coded and that is fine too, but it still amounts to the reader getting it.

My Atheist Poem, by Me

Nothing rhymes with atheist,
I've tried the live-long daytheist
To rhyme this toughie of a word,
Good thing I don't believe in Gord.

(on second thought, maybe I'd better leave poetry to the pros)

Nothing rhymes with atheist,

Sexiest, slimiest, shittiest...

It doesn't have to be spelled the same to constitute a rhyme.

Don't worry, they're awful too.
