Welcome to the forum!
You may want to check out the book -
Parenting Beyond Belief: On Raising Ethical, Caring Kids Without Religion by Dake NcGowen
I believe it has some useful info on your specific issues.
Maybe you should consider attending a Unitarian Universalist Church. It may fill the space your children are missing, without the indoctrination.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Hello Willow.
You will find many types here.
Some like to swear, some don't
Some are arrogant, some are passive.
"Just like real life"
We are the people that like to keep things real.
I was thinking the other day lying in bed about people's belief systems.
If you are an atheist, you are comfortable, no need to question anything.
If you are religious, the subconscious mind will always be there like background noise.
Because there is no proof of god, when people are indoctrinated to believe in a god in an affirmative way, for the rest of their lives, their logical subconscious will constantly try to "deny the non existence of god" until proof is provided. This is the background noise I mentioned. In your case the subconscious gave up and you feel "free".
Just my 2 cents.
We don't need to preach here and have no agenda to sell. You'll quickly spot those that do.
Actually I lied. I am trying to sell you reality ... And it's free. And no-one has to die in it's name.
No God, No fear.
Know God, Know fear.

Well welcome to the forum, I too am new here. Personally I don't have kids (I am too young) but I guess just like you said, you can't enforce your atheism or lack of belief on your kids. You should incentive them to be open to ideas and ideologies, different positions, explain both arguments, have debates, but never force them to share your views (that actually can go against any secular constitution, even as a parent). I'm glad to see you've let religion go. Can I ask why did you take so long to become an atheist? I am simply curious (I assume you are middle aged because you have 3 kids) because I was an atheist since age 14 and never understood why people take decades to let go religion, to me it made sense to become an atheist since I started to think critically for real. I hope you keep doing well and my best wishes to your kids.
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you
