Go for fedora, with the cinnamon window manager.
- lots of people use it.
- cinnamon provides the closest experience to windows.
- Always one of the first to get new updates.

As much as any linux, I guess.
Just don't use the root account like a windows idiot and you'll be fine.

I would stick with Windows 7 its being said that once Windows 9 comes out windows 7/8 users will get a free update straight to it .. This pretty much makes windows 8 obsolete
