Civ 5

RE: Civ 5
One thing that's been bugging me, I notice you can't load land units onto ships now? Or can you? I got the optics tech and I can embark my troops into the sea so they can go onto islands and such, but damn they're slow. And completely vulnerable. Can you load your land units onto sea units? I know you could do this on civ rev but it doesn't appear to work in civ 5.

Not to my knowledge, in later techs they can hold their own a little better. Its best to have a ship scouting + protecting them if you can. Its always a risk though.

Yeah, you can't. I either send them through seas I know are safe, escort them, or convoy so many it doesn't matter if one or two don't make it.

If I'm playing on a map with a lot of water - which I usually do - I do whatever I can to achieve naval superiority, and then you can move embarked units with impunity.

I like tall because you don't have too much of a juggling act keeping happiness positive. You also just have to focus on keeping a few cities growing strong, with tradition you just keep units in your cities and you pay no maintenance. Only downside is that you can go the whole game and not really get into any major wars. Its good for the victory but waging massive wars is awesome.

Same here. I usually stick with three-four cities, and puppet or raze any I capture. I have played several games where I went wide because I needed forward cities for strategic reasons. It's quite a bit harder and there's more micromanagement needed.

Somehow, I still manage to get in massive wars. Angel

Hmm, I usually have to instigate them. When I do I just raze everything that isn't a capital.

I usually end up instigating it when I catch someone with an invasion force nearby. I would prefer to not fire the first shot, but with surprise, I can destroy an invading navy in one swell foop. I don't always raze in late game, so I can have forward staging bases for aircraft and nukes. Carriers are too damn vulnerable.

RE: Civ 5
I kind of wanted to wage a war on the new map, and I took a couple of cities, but the unhappiness was a real pain. I don't really know how to manage that yet.

I guess going wide or tall depends on how many neighbors you have on your continent.

I don't like that troops can't board ships. I also don't like that most siege weapons don't have a range of 3. Catapults, trebuchets, and cannons don't have a longer range than archers and crossbowmen, meaning they're just as vulnerable to city attack as everything else. I love that ranged units can fire from two hexes away, but it doesn't make sense that an archer can fire an arrow as far as a catapult can launch a rock.

Does anyone know where the map seed is listed, so I can restart on the same map without keeping a save of it? I'd like to write it down outside the game, to keep up with a nice map.

RE: Civ 5
I prefer normal or quick speed, continents mostly but some random map occasionally.

What difficulty are you playing? And what strategy are you using when trying to take a city?

Catapults/trebuchet to soften the city defense while letting melee units withstand the city's attacks is usually a working strategy early on. Of course it depends on what kind/how many units the opponent has. Early sige units are pretty much defenseless in the beginning so you need to protect them with other units.

Sorry if this is too basic, it's kind of hard to give general advice without knowing the skill of the player. I'm no Civ expert myself - played alot but I'm still on King/Emperor Tongue

I'm not expert either. I play on easy/normal. Back when I took a city without walls, I had two ballistas (roman catapults), and two archers. I took the city pretty quickly, and had a couple of legions to make the final blow or defend the ballistas. With a walled city that had other protectors around it, I had a hard time just setting up safely.

I guess it's best to try to scout out how many defenders there are around the city, and take them out to isolate it before really getting to work, but I still have to move my siege weapons into the city's firing range and the walled city can take down a siege weapon about as easily as anything else. Having a catapult that can fire from three spaces away may seem overpowered to some people, but it is realistic and siege weapons are about the only thing that doesn't get a penalty when attacking cities.

Double posting because there's a time limit on the edit function.

I just got denounced for starting a fifth city on a Pangaea map. I decided to try a domination only map as the Japanese, with no city states. My starting area was a fair distance from everyone else, so I felt free to expand a bit even though I didn't go for the Liberty policy that helps with the wide build. I've been doing honor and commerce.

Anyway I guess that's another thing they can get bunched up over, even though I wasn't really putting cities close to other civs. I get the feeling that there would have been city states in the empty space if I had allowed them. Conveniently enough, I have a mountain range to my right, and a river to my south, with ocean to my west. That makes some nice natural borders.
