Civ 5
RE: Civ 5
Something kind of funny. while I'm fighting someone, I took two of his cities with artillery, and killed a fair chunk of his military. He did have more, I think, but he contacts me asking for a peace treaty without anything extra to sweeten the deal. I asked for some of his extra gems, and he said that's not a fair deal. I'm like yeah, it's not supposed to be fair. You got in my face multiple times, attacking my allied city states, and asked what I was going to do about it. So I decided to use artillery to take your two closest cities as puppets.

It's been hard maintaining friends in this game. They covet my lands, and we're competing against the same cultural city states. It reminds me of Total War, Medieval 2, in that you can't really stay friends with civs who border you.

I like artillery. After my crossbowmen upgrade to riflemen, it's about the only ranged unit you have, but it's also about the only ranged unit you need until flight.

I've been lucky in my most recent game to be surrounded by city states. I have my 4 strong cities all with room to grow and a nice circle of city states between me and anyone who would want to fight me. Being so close all the bandits that I have been killing has made me allied with most of them too.

The only real way to attack me without having to deal with city states would be the ocean to my west. In that I have my navy going around tracking down bandits. Big Grin

Ok you people convinced me, I'm downloading this fucker... On a side note, does anybody here still play the occasional random map game on AOEII? I do
Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you

I used to keep going back to AOEII but after playing more modern strategy games it just feels too empty.

I'm kind of iffy about age of empires. I think I'm too used to turn based strategy games instead of real time. Although I Like Total War's idea of mixing it up with a turn based campaign map with real time battles.

For your first game I wouldn't think too much about what kind of game you want to play, just pick a small map, pick the civs you want in it and play standard speed. That's what got me into it at least, once you've completed a game you'll get the bug and want to start customising shit and playing more specific games. Just pick a map type that sounds appealing (I'd suggest small continents myself). I'd keep the difficulty on Warlord too, if you find that too easy you can just up it in the next game you play.

Just what I'd suggest, feel free to completely disregard and do what you like Tongue

Total war is still the best strategy game IMO. Nothing beats it.

I played Medieval 2, Shogun 2, and Rome 2. I like S2 better than M2, except that realm divide only pertains to you. Some other clan can snatch a third or so of the map, but if you take 15 provinces or whatever you get hit with realm divide.

Rome 2 was quite different, and I haven't played it as much after getting so used to S2.

When playing S2, I regret not being able to upgrade units like M2, or to buy regions from people. It's a bit of a shame to go to war over one region.

I loved the politics in Medieval 2, but Rome 1 was the best total war game. Simplest and best.

YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING AWESOME!!!!
My absolute favorite games are Civ (played every title), Total War (played every title but the newest because my comp sucks), and Crusader Kings (played every title). If you play Crusader Kings 2 and are as a big a fucking nerd as me, then try the Game of Thrones mod for Crusader Kings 2.

I'm not sure how you could love the politics. You can't trust anyone, even allies that you have outstanding relationships with. Not to mention that people you're at war with won't accept peace even when they're losing horribly.

I'm afraid I haven't played Crusader Kings. I'll put that on my list.
