I think part of the problem is that people tend to justify their actions after taking them. The adults will think of themselves as the "normal" ones, and describe average individuals as unhealthily skinny.
The same goes for religious people. They've spent years donating time and money to the church, so would rather justify this in increasingly irrational ways, rather than admit that it was stupid and they were wrong.
This isn't unique to these individuals, we all do it and it's very hardnot to. A silly example is my mother, who used to say that you couldn't swim within an hour of eating. This meant that for my entire childhood I had to obey this rule. Having recently told her that this was just an old wives tale, she still goes along with it, saying things like "well I'm sure it was a good idea" and "it's old advice so must be true" etc etc.

My neighborhood does too. However, I take issue with your claim that the most affordable food is also the most unhealthy. Yes, it's true that much "affordable" food is unhealthy processed crap, but some of the least expensive food items you can buy are among the healthiest options in the store, including fresh produce, whole grains, and beans.

Back when I was over 200 pounds, I justified it by saying at least I wasn't a beach ball. I certainly wasn't as fat as other family members. I am 180 lbs now, though.

Now, I'm a believer that adults are entitled to do pretty much what they want with their bodies: drink, smoke, extreme sports etc. I post on a rugby forum and some of the injury anecdotes there are pretty bad. But that's adults. (Who pays for it is a different issue.)
But it seems to me that allowing your children to get that obese, in the knowledge - if they understand it - that the child will likely have multiple health problems, and die young, represents child abuse. If it wasn't for the fact that the care system in Britain is terrible, with very poor outcomes, I'd suggest that the children should be taken into care. As it is, I guess there's not very much that can be done. Maybe social services could intervene.
Very disturbing. I wouldn't go as far as considering it child abuse. This is something that is volatile to different considerations depending on the concrete case - Some parents are uneducated and ignorant, they may not be aware that obesity is that bad, they may think being fat is a sign of wealth, etc. I do agree that social services could intervene, but still I think the best bet is education.
The problem here is that there's nothing to accuse parents of - Are we going to accuse them of feeding their children too much food? That sounds a bit silly. And let's not forget slippery slope. Should it be considered child abuse too if parents don't put their kids into sports? After all, sports are healthy.
And when do we let teenagers make their own decisions? I'll give you my example, when I was 14 years old I started smoking, my mother knew, but she didn't do anything - Prohibition would make things worse - Do you think she should be accused of child abuse for letting me smoke and get addicted?
I prefer education over prohibition and lawsuits/charges, but that's just my opinion.

Quite right. You can batch-cook meals and freeze them down, a kilo of chicken costs a few euros, onions etc, search online for recipes. Cheap and healthy.

Agreed. I was referring to those who can't or don't cook or have access to cooking items/supplies/appliances. My food budget is low because I buy the things you mentioned, and yes, they're very affordable if you have a place to cook and store them. Unfortunately, many of the low income folks don't cook or are homeless and have to eat from the dollar menu at fast food places.

Yeah but, being obese is "curable" and it is usually self inflicted.
