The things that religion makes you do.
August 26, 2014 at 4:13 pm
I was watching the cricket (we won for a change) and one of our best players is a muslim with a full beard, and it got me thing about some of the trivial things that religion makes you do. Not shaving is one of them, which afflicts some muslim sects - not all, I think - some fundamentalist Jewish sects, and Sikhs, who also have to wear a turban, have a comb in their hair and carry a knife.
Disclaimer here: I don't really know much about this stuff so there could be errors.
A ban on pork is another, there's no real reason for it. No bacon and eggs for breakfast. Only muslims and jews afaik.
The birth control thing is not really trivial, I suppose, so I'll leave it out, along with circumcision.
Lent and ramadan probably fall into the trivial category, along with fish on Fridays. The extreme measures that jews adopt to avoid working on the sabbath are amazing, like refusing to tear off toilet paper, which must be a bit messy. Hindus and cows is another thing. I suppose buddhists do some stuff but I don't know what it is.
What on earth is the point of all this nonsense? Why is shaving important, along with bog paper?

Because at one time doing or not doing the wrong thing was a death sentence. Stoning people for just about anything. It still happens in some places.

I've mentioned this before, a Jewish friend of mine would pick the meat of his pizza slice at work, and I asked about if it would have been OK to have ordered hamburger instead of sausage. No as it turns out, milk (in the form of cheese) and beef together is a problem too. He said he really didn't mind, he found comfort in participating in his religion through out the day. As a Jew working in a 90% Christian environment at a US defense contractor it didn't seem unreasonable to me he wanted to do things that way. I don't think he had to put up with any crap from the Christers at work, but management was clearly top heavy with Christers and the board was quite (notably) conservative too. We had Bork (really) on the board for a while. As a gay man working at a defense contractor with a board member publishing a book titled 'Slouching Towards Gomorrah" I had probably more 'interesting' and stressful days there than did our Jewish tech analyst.
We had a lesbian in out department too, she was pretty serious about her career path there. I was pretty neutral on the topic, LOL.

When I was in London I read a newspaper account of a cricket match.
I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

You already know about alcohol and pork. The only allowed meat is that
Of herbivores (I only ever ate chicken, fish which I hate, camel and lamb which is very important in libya unfortunately cause I hate lamb).
My mum thinks beef is very bad but that has to do with hearsay not religion.
Music and dancing.
movies and books that are impious and obscene.
Dress codes. Tattooing and makeup.
