Close enough ???
Meh, I guess since there is no such thing as a utopia, close enough for Fox News reporting.

IF IF IF IF IF the word was used in a context that values instead of dictates I would agree, but for the reasons stated in the OP it is not a word worthy of use.
You can earn value too. But claims do not deserve taboos, power does not deserve taboos, which is why people invoke "respect", to set up a taboo.

ARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG!
CONTEXT, not either.or but CONTEXT, it still depends.
No I will not play nice with my words to bigotry, attacks on science, or threats of violence. Do not expect me to.
"Respect" does not mean "common courtesy", it is a word used by fascists and theocrats and the insecure. It is a way to silence criticism and blasphemy.
I am fine with, "I'll be nice to you if you are nice to me". But even within personal relationships, you still do not have the right to dictate to others. You can only request someone not do something, but you still do not have the right to make demands of them. If they do not stop doing something you don't like, then it is up to you to stay or go.
The apla male wants "respect", that is not moral, that is simply saying "know your place".

Why are you so angry? I didn't say respect means common courtesy. I said people confuse the two. People often say respect when what they really mean is common courtesy.

I am not "angry" like you think, stop it please really.
Ever hang out with friends and one of them says something stupid or does something stupid and you just want to pull your hair out? That is how I feel about my fellow human. NO I DO NOT WANT TO GO ON A KILLING SPREE, M-Kay.

And I am telling you that is NOT the common use like you would like it to be.
It is a way to silence criticism and blasphemy and avoid having to think about your own claims.
It is used by the alpha male and the insecure as a way to silence others. It has nothing to do with merely being polite.
I told you HOW healthy relationships work.
You, "Hey would you mind not doing that"
Me, "Ok, yes I agree to stop"
Or
You, "Would you mind not doing that"
Me, "Yes I do mind"
You, "Ok, fine, see you later"
Not
You, "I demand you stop"
"I demand you stop" is what "respect" means, having nothing to do with a mutual relationship.
