RE: [split] PORN
As stated that all sounds like nothing more than sensory feedback. Blood sugar low? This affects what? Somekinda markers where? In the brain. When something in the body is not 'right' the body sensors send signals to the brain to let "YOU" know.

Damage the brain where these markers reside and these markers are affected (well DUH) and that will lead to decision making problems. That seems to support my contentions.

Lop off your head, place it in life support and the only thing your brain will now lack is sensory input.
If those sensors and input can be artificially reproduced you will remain you.

I could be wrong. But it is not the body that interfered with the decision making in your link. It was damage to the brain where this input is registered.

Under 'normal' conditions you need a body to fill the markers. And yes you can fake the input. I did not argue against that. The question arose as to where the self resides. If you acknowledge that decision-making is typically a trait that defines the self, than you would have to conclude that the self does not reside in your brain alone. Now, what is your evidence that it does?

Where does decision making occur?

The evidence you offered does not indicate any decision making occurs outside the brain.
You're links show internal stimuli produces markers WITHIN THE BRAIN and decision making skills are affected when THE BRAIN is damaged.

I believe you have already provided evidence that decision making occurs within the brain not outside of it. Therefore if decision-making is typically a trait that defines the self, than you would have to conclude that the self does reside in your brain alone.

You have not provided any indicators that show any decision making happens outside the brain.

It's like you're arguing the calculations of a computer are not wholly made in the CPU but also in the harddrive, keyboard and mouse as that is what provides the input.

By the argument you're using decision making doesn't occur anywhere in the brain since all steps in the process of decision making rely on information transfer from one place to the next, most notably as performed by neurons those pesky little information transformers.

My point is that this transfer and transformation does not exclusively start from within the brain.

So could you finally give evidence for the fact that decision making is an exclusive process within the brain?

Robert Winston has a series of studies on a set of children born on the millenium called "Child of Our time" aired on BBC periodically charting the childrens' development.

Here's the part on gender development. I hope ppl will find it interesting: http://www.open2.net/healtheducation/fam...pment.html

In the programme the point was made that if a child was made aware that traits they displayed were either masculine or feminine then this contributed to the construction of the psychological gender identity of the child, independently of their physical gender.

So if you predominantly display attributes that your society perceives as opposite to your physical sex, your mind could believe you to be one sex, where your physical gender is the other.

No one said it ORIGINATES in the brain. You poke yourself in the finder with a sharp object or hang upsidedown and the sensors that sense this and tell your brain "you've been poked" or "hey! You're upsidedown!" This information transfer from one place to the next is just that. A transfer of information.

What you do about it is decided where?

Your nervous system is the carrier of information, it is a bundle of wires. It does not 'compute'. The links you provided do not suggest otherwise. If anyone can provide some scientific peer reviewed stuff that shows otherwise I'd be happy to see it.

Until then my contention is you are the one with the extra-ordinary claim. That nerves somehow calculate and compute and can make decisions. So it is you who is burdened to prove.

Since you seem to acknowledge that decision-making is typically a trait that defines the self, the argument now is where does this decision making occur.

My evidence of such? The link you provided. It stated 'damage this part of the brain, affects decision making abilities'. There ya go.

If you cut yer head off you still retain the ability to make decisions. Not very long shure 'nuff, but you can make decisions.

I'd bet folks like Stephen Hawkins would agree. His physical body is a wreck. It's all fuked up and I would maintain for all its sensors they ain't workin' right. Seems to make decisions pretty well though.
Many folks with illnesses that rack the body but not the brain maintain quality decision making abilities. Those with ones that rack the brain but not the body (such as alheimers) seem to be the ones with a poorer decision making ability.

Not one person here even addressed the brains in one's arse comment I made. The entire point was that the brain is the experiential self. You can't self identify using your body but you can identify your body as being you.
fr0d0, you're a dickhead.
There is the mind and there is the body, why is this such a point of contension?
Dotard, your first comment about synthetic hormones, and the robotic limb are representitive of the "physical self" which the mind can identify with but also doesn't represent the central point of consciousness - the mind. Being full of tricks you're easily fooled by your brain into thinking your body is a part of a thinking center.
Yeah, peripheral and central NS (nervous system) is really just like roads, cars the signals, and a cop traffic attendant, You.
