Convert or Move Out: Emergency

RE: Convert or Move Out: Emergency
My deepest condolences, that is just brutally wrong Sad I'm so sorry you have to live among such ignorant and horrid people. It sounds like they are giving you no real choice. I really hope you can find a way to get by.

It's shit like this that makes me hate religion so much.

We are out of the house by the 30th of this month.

Help.

Firstly, I'm so sorry this is happening to you, QC. This is not how family should act toward one another.

Secondly, regarding where to go, you might try going to a local hospital and asking if there is a social worker on staff who can direct you toward some local shelters or other short-term residences. They would be a good resource to tap, especially since your situation was brought about by a medical diagnosis.

You needn't necessarily tell them that you're losing your current residence because of pressure to convert, just tell them that circumstances have changed and your current residence is no longer an option.

Good luck and let us know how you're doing! Heart

Ok the pragmatic choice is to just lie - I would wholeheartedly lie to my parents if the same situation happened to me, if I was in a deep, troubling situation like yours - And I'm good at lying. The ethical choice is to not convert and search for a new house. I don't know where is the love between parents and children when they make these ultimatums.

9 months ago we left religion. 3 months ago I fell ill, was hospitalized and lost my job, and consequently had to move in with my believing in-laws.

But, after 3 months of living with our in-laws, my wife and I have been given an ultimatum. "Convert or move out."

I don't know where to turn. We only know believers, our only family are believers. I'm tired of being a secular family (my wide and I) among believers. Their help always comes with strings attached, but if in four weeks, things don't get better, my wife and I will have to leave school and work to live with my parents who live in a small town an hour and a half from here. I am thankful that they have offered to take us in, but I am afraid to be in the same situation again.

The judgments are heavy, by patience has gone thin, and we have no secular friends to turn to. We have no money and find it hard to travel 20 miles to meet with secularists.

I never thought that being atheist was good enough to make someone homeless. I'm almost confused, as if I live in a dream. I never fathomed such hate and apathy could be applied for a simple lack of belief.

Where do I go? Where do I turn?

We are out of the house by the 30th of this month.

Help.

I'm really sorry to hear about that. I hope your situation inproves

This sucks! Angry

How any parent could put their own child out for not sharing a belief is beyond my comprehension.

Could they be bluffing?

I makes me sad that someone who calls themself a Christian would be so judgemental and unloving. This is what happens when "Christians" are more concerned with their own agenda than the very Pinacle of their beliefs. Things like this need to change for anyone to take Christianity seriously!

And when you do get on your feet make sure everyone at their church knows you were only their because your in-laws are evil, controlling fucks.

Also, if you get mail at their house & you decide to not "convert", force them to legally evict you. That will give you another 30 to 60 days depending on the state.

With the amount of preaching I had to endure over time, I can easily become a fake preacher if I am pushed into a corner. But seriously, between your parents and your 4 weeks limit with your in-laws, you have quite some time to get a job and find some accommodations. I don't know how much your wife earns, but since you don't have kids or dependents, it shouldn't be too hard to find a roof.

If all else fails, you can always start seeing the light, open your heart, e.t.c till you do find a roof.

While my flesh cries out in agreement with your answer to this injustice, my experience tells me that taking the high road is the better choice on the long journey. Lowering oneself to the level of ones oppressors is never a solution.
