Well, he has the option of either continuing to wallow in self pity (which drinking only exacerbates) or he can move on. Honestly, I don't know how he can ever expect to have a good relationship with a woman when he's continually hung up on the past. No woman wants to hear her date droning on about his ex. When he learns to let those feelings stop affecting his life, he can begin to start living.
