For an idea of what it could have been there is always "I, Claudius."

I'm going to Rome in February with my kid and I'll be sure to look for a tour with a live educational re-enactment of the "surgery" scene.

We went on an after-dark tour of a local Gold-Rush history museum just before Halloween and we were treated to the tools and methods of 19th century "medical" treatment, which weren't much more advanced than the video above.
