I actually liked Shutter Island, but I kinda guessed what was really happening early on, and that sorta made it "Meh" during the rest of the movie.

And I definitely have to put Silence of the Lambs here.
I didn't really find it scary so much as it just oozed its way under my skin and didn't want to let go.

I consider Signs and Silence of the Lambs to be "thrillers" rather than "horror." But I will honorarily add them to my list seeing as how my last movie was jokey. Big Grin

What? a horror movie list without M. Night Shyamalan? you must be out of your minds... watch those and you will be scarred for life.

1) Dragon Ball Z - A movie so scary, no one in their right mind can sit through the entire thing.
2) Avatar: The Last Airbender - Any child who watches this without crying or running away is bound to become a psychopath later on.
3) After Earth - A movie so scary that even the actors acting in it had to learn to control their fear just to act in it.
4) The Happening - The next evolution for zombie movies where the main cast portray the best expressionless zombies ever, and the rest of the world is dead.
5) The Lady In The Water - The masterpiece where Mr.Shyamalan shows how scary he himself can be (as an actor).

...And for the scaredy-cats here, for whom the above might be too scary, I do have some more "normal" suggestions to prepare you for Halloween.

6) Wicked Little Things - Combine the creepiest things on this planet, known as children, with the coolest thing, zombies, and give them mining equipments as weapons, and you get best "children's" movie ever.
7) The Bad Seed - This movie is old, real old, and that is probably why it had the wisdom to warn the world about the true horrors of children. It also got 4 Oscar nominations for having the courage to portray the truth.
8) Home Alone - Ever wonder what a budding psychopath looks like? Well here's your answer.
9) The Good Son - If you are still not convinced about the pint-sized psychopath, here is the sequel that documents his progress.
10) Village of the Damned - Now that you know the danger, this last flick will show you the best tested ways to deal with these little creepers.

Now just relax and wait for the night when these little buggers will come to your door in their sunday bests. Whether you open that door or not is a choice that you'll have to make...

In no particular order:
The Exorcist
The Strangers
Jaws
Evil Dead
Silent Hill
John Carpenter's The Thing
The Shining
Insidious
Child's Play
Halloween

I heard that the movies Sleepaway Camp and the Conjuring are really good but I haven't had a chance to see them yet

I am a fan of the horror genre first and foremost. I do not particularly have a tops list or favorites for the reason that I tend to enjoy all the ones I watch.

Not in any particular order:

1. Dawn of the Dead - Romero's original of course. Still a film I can't watch before bedtime.

2. Night of the Living Dead - again, not the pointless remake.

3. The Wicker Man - the film that Christopher Lee considers the best he's ever been in. The director's cut, natch.

4. The Woman in Black - a fairly recent Hammer entry.

5. Dead Silence - from the people who brought you Saw. The last horror that Sam and I watched together, and I wrapped my arms around her to comfort her during some pretty genuinely creepy scenes.

6. Frankenstein - the classic Karloff original and never done better.

7. Haunter - a recent interesting twist on the haunted house genre. What is it like actually to find out you are a ghost?

8. The Marsh - very, very creepy.

9. Mama - another creep show with a very neat ending.

10. Patrick - another big favourite of Sam and I. This ingenious 1978 horror, starring Susan Penhaligon and the Childcatcher himself, Robert Helpmann, walks firmly in the footprints of Hitchcock. Well worth checking out.

Couple of honorable mentions:

Conspiracy - not a horror in the accepted sense, but this adaptation of the infamous Wansee meeting of top Nazi staff to discuss the "Final Solution to the Jewish Question" is a showcase of how evil minds can change the world.

Ghostwatch - a TV movie and rather obscure. Shown on the BBC for Hallowe'en in 1992 and never repeated in this country since, this mockumentary starring Michael Parkinson, Sarah Green, Mike Smith and Craig Charles is believed to have been watched by the producers of the Blair Witch Project and may have been partly the inspiration for it. It's since been released on DVD and is sitting on my shelf, though most of it can be found on youtube; DMCA permitting.

Here's a fun double feature for all of you:

Reanimator and Bride of Reanimator.

Note:
make sure the version of Reanimator you're watching has the oral sex scene.

Comedy as well.
