Science Keeps Working

RE: Science Keeps Working
Yeah. And science is harder than religion. But if an answer seems too easy and convenient, it probably is. And an answer such as goddunit is the ultimate stifler of further learning.

But when you achieve something that seems difficult at first, you have earned it and can feel good about it. Accepting what other people say at face value, however, is just the lazy option and you set yourself up to believe more and more stuff without question.

But you've read the Bible and found it to be just fine and dandy?

Yea

I'm not sure I understand, abracadabra feels right - you've read that book and it's "ok". Meanwhile, experimention, lifetimes of open observations, predictions...failures, success - just work...in general - that you could be doing yourself-...that doesn't "feel sound"? Meanwhile, on the other hand...someone handed you a book about ghosts......and wewt - it all falls into place?

In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. My advice is to read the bible again. But take a step back, imagine you know nothing about it at all, and that you have no external reason to think it's automatically true.

Read it all, not just the nice bits people like to cherry pick. See if from an objective point of view you can come up with an argument that it is (a) moral, as in beneficial to wellbeing, to follow it and (b) that what is described in it, beyond a bit of general history, is really true. Think how you would differentiate between it and Harry potter if you'd never seen either book before.

If you would try that experiment, I'd be a happy dude Smile

Remember, because someone says something, that doesn't mean it's true. Even if lots of people say something, still doesn't mean it's true. If they write something down, doesn't mean it's true. And if it was written down a long time ago, it gets less and less likely to be true without a huge load of external evidence.

Comparing one part of the bible to another to verify it is like comparing one part of Harry potter to another and concluding the characters in it are real because they are consistent and the story links to reality at least in some manner.

It's hard to accept your reality is crumbling because science is proving it wrong. I was never a firm believer in ghosts ever, but when science came out trying to present what these abnormalities actually were, I was a little sad. Knew it logically made no sense that ghosts existed, but the kid in me..yeah. .nevermind.

Shit...I'm livid that there isn't a divine reality TV show going on over our heads. Think of what I'd save on cable alone?

I think that's where spirituality really comes from. It's the unwillingness to let go of the "magical" elements we like to think about as children. A socially acceptable mild delusion, as opposed to an acceptable full on delusion of religion.

I'm all for keeping the child in you alive, but I also advocate keeping that child out of big life decisions.

I mean, take ghosts. If ghosts are occasionally visible and if just 0.01% of dead people are here as ghosts, we wouldn't be able to move without seeing hundreds of the fuckers.
