Quote:In his new book, Were You Born on the Wrong Continent?, Thomas Geoghegan makes a strong case that European social democracies — particularly Germany — have some lessons and models that might make life a lot more livable. Germans have six weeks of federally mandated vacation, free university tuition, and nursing care. But you’ve heard the arguments for years about how those wussy Europeans can’t compete in a global economy. You’ve heard that so many times, you might believe it. But like so many things, the media repeats endlessly, it’s just not true.

Too bad it will not happen literally.

When the UK hosted the Olympics some of my Republican friends were surprised the the UK liked their health care system enough that it would be part of the opening ceremonies. Their entire image of health care systems other then ours is based on very negative press.

Free education is one of the more common ones across the pond. They win with just that.

I would have liked to have been born in a more progressive, secular country. The sad thing is that if this country was as it should be, it would be a fantastic place to live. Without religion being deep in education and politics, and without the government being of, by, and for the rich.

Well we used to but the tories wanted to make sure poor people couldn't compete with Tarquin for the top jobs so now university is £9000 a year.

Meh, if you live the right lifestyle you can have more time away from work in the United States than in Europe fore sure. 2 weeks of vacation or 6 weeks of vacation, it's all bullshit. Personally I only work about 2 months of the year. I couldn't do that in Europe because of the tax situation.

And it's curious that Germany's current government is conservative (Merkel), if I'm not mistaken

But in a coalition with the social democrats. Not that they're that far left anyway. Merkel also seems rather moderate.
Alex K can probably give a better explanation, but point is, what's considered conservative in America would be rightwing extremism in Europe. What's considered left in America would be a little bit to the right of mainstream conservatism.
That should give you the right impression. Also, an openly religious fundamentalist shouldn't consider to run for office in Europe. They would be laughed from the stage the first time they gave a speech. There are actually parties promoting christian values, but they're at the very fringe of the electorate. The mainstream conservatives consider themselves christian too, but they don't make it part of their campaigns.
