Awareness
I was rambling in my head on awareness and decided to check some things out.

I was watching some bird mating rituals and got to wondering why they would care when pheromones and hormones would get the job done without the rituals.

Humans have about 86B neurons with 19-23B concentrated in the cerebral cortex. (19B for women and 23B for men.) An African elephant has 11B in the cerebral cortex with a roundworm having 302 total. The roundworm has 7500 synapses, whereas a human has 1E15. As a side note, it turns out that Autism seems to be based on excessive synapses.

If we assume that our awareness is based in neural synaptic processes, we would have to assume the roundworm has some awareness. With birds having more, that would suggest that they are aware of and do appreciate the ritual.

Interesting article on bird brains.

I'm aware of german porn - and yet I do not appreciate.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Don't miss out on the jackdaws and relatives, they can be mad smart as well Smile

The other day while waiting in the car, I saw a carrion crow lay a walnut on the street. She was then waiting for cars to run it over to crack it. After looking at the nut for a while, she decided that the placement wasn't optimal and moved it by a foot or so. The next car that passed cracked it and she took the pieces. Crazy birds!

Wow The raven not only used a tool, the stick, but modified it by putting a hook in it.

Yeah, I have. They're impressive creatures. There are many many more of these vids around. Some of them funny, because they're acting seemingly human, like kicking a fellow raven for stealing food, some of the actually amazing.
