The Purity Movement

RE: The Purity Movement
Quote:As for who told them that, one guesses it's Dad - a Dad like Pastor Randy Wilson, who started the Purity movement and has five daughters enrolled.
I don't find it terribly surprising that a neurotic fundamentalist with five daughters would found a whole movement dedicated to keeping those filthy boys out of their pants. I would hate to be one of his sons, though.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Pretty much.

The Purity movement is effectively the same as traditional Chineze practice of foot binding only on a mental level. An ugly practice.

"I had a teacher who was talking about abstinence, she said, 'Imagine you're a stick of gum and when you engage in sex, that's like getting chewed, and if you do that lots of times, you're going to become an old piece of gum, and who's going to want you after that?"

Smart says those words rang in her memory. She felt ruined.

This is from the same article in the link.

Like I said not all parts of the program work well mostly because teachers get over zealous in their teachings, which is unfortunate.
One thing I see out of atheist, they will jump on an issue that comes up in Christianity and run Christians down. They never explore all the good that comes from many Christian programs, hatred of a people is a very bad thing, we try to do what's best for our families just like most others.

GC

There is not a single Christian programme (or indeed religious programme) out there that produces results that can't be done by a purely secular organisation. With no indoctrination and no guilt tripping.

This programme is a perfect example of child abuse because it's telling children (emphasis on telling, more like preaching) that a perfectly natural desire/urge is unnatural and evil. As others have said, when this is reinforced to children they automatically feel guilty for being 'normal' (you cannot erase a teenage boy's automatic erection when he sees a girl he fancies), which seriously fucks up their brain chemistry and how they relate to people when the programme deems the old enough to make their own decisions.

It's abuse because it hasn't imparted them with the ability to make those decisions in the first place.

And please, for once in your life, stop playing the fucking persecution card. Your beliefs are fucking retarded, true, as are the beliefs of those in that stupid fucking purity programme. But us calling you out on those stupid beliefs is not fucking persecution. It's that reality thing which a lot of the God squad seem completely unprepared for, probably because they had some dickhead like the guy who started this programme telling them that having natural desires and urges is somehow wrong and will condemn them a firey pit.

Indeed.

And I'm totally not OK with the idea that parents should be allowed to to whatever they want to/with their children, and to force harmful beliefs onto them. Just like it's not OK for God to treat us how he likes just because he claims to have created us.

When someone is dependent on you, you have a duty of care to look after them. That should involve educating yourself first.

Amusing. Suddenly 'teach the controversy' is no longer a viable education tactic.

RE: The Purity Movement
Why shouldn't schools teach about sex? Children go to school to learn from people who know a lot more about the subjects than their parents (in general). And who are trained in explaining it well. There are a lot of straightforward facts when it comes to sex that parents either may not know, or may be too embarrassed to talk to their kids about.

Personally, my parents didn't teach me one single thing. I'm sure some are much better, but we have an education system to make sure everyone is getting the information they need.

This information is going to very important to the vast majority of the population, and ignorance can have severe consequences.

RE: The Purity Movement
Most parents don't want someone else teaching their children about sex exactly because of that.
