Have you tried meditation to reach an altered state? Once in a while I have been able to meditate and reach an altered state that is qualitatively different from taking drugs IMO. (I don't meditate very often unfortunately, because I am not very disciplined. I'm sure others know much more about mediation than me, because I've only started trying a year ago.)
