The only way it could work, is for government to completely ignore religion and make any mention of religious beliefs, while in the public view, completely illegal and disqualify them from further office. Other than that, treat religious institutes the same as any other business without any laws specifically favoring or punishing them.

Oh wait. Is not that what our constitution says? Damn, guess that will not work either.

Secularism does not mean that politicians will not be uninfluenced by their own religious beliefs about morality etc. Nor does it mean that the religious should not, or cannot hold office. It means that religion should not enforce or support religion.

RE: Secularism..
A politician should not profess his religion or belief on an official medium. I, as a voter, should not know or care whether the politician is a muslim, a christian, a buddhist, an atheist or whatever.
You make people miserable and there's nothing they can do about it, just like god.
-- Homer Simpson

God has no place within these walls, just as facts have no place within organized religion.
-- Superintendent Chalmers

Science is like a blabbermouth who ruins a movie by telling you how it ends. There are some things we don't want to know. Important things.

Once something's been approved by the government, it's no longer immoral.

Agreed, but if you google "britains first muslim mp"...
You'll get reams of celebratory posts... but my point is, I don't care... just do what's right for your voters.

Saying you're muslim suggests that you won't do your best for the atheists in your ward
PS if you're about to post a reply and your response is going to be negative, improper, average, odd, obtuse, irrational, an argument, might change the focus, going off at a tangent or just mean ... go and find a maths forum to post on instead, they'll love you !!
