As a person of at least some semblance of reason, you owe your fellow man and society the best that you can give, because at the end of the day, all we have are each other, for better or worse. Wake up and start doing something for society. Ok. You are an atheist, which means you aren't a complete wack job. This is great, now move on with your life. Its not enough to just sit around and "be an atheist." You have to start giving a shit, or we are all doomed. (March 7, 2010 at 5:18 am)EvidenceVsFaith Wrote: I welcome you to these forums. I remember when I first started realizing that. I just assumed everyone who was an atheist must be a super reasonable an level headed person. Poor 16 year old me when I realized that the notion was FAR from true.

Welcome to the forums and I hope you enjoy your stay.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

Which is evidence of one of they main reasons I am a non believer. Nobody can ever become Christian unless they are told about it. So in actuallity, there are two things you must do to get into heaven: 1. Be told about this whole Jesus thing 2. Accept Jesus as your savior. But hey! What's one more thing right! Although the kicker is that part 1 isn't even up to you....sounds well thought out to me...

Aw thanks Min,
I don't think that necessarily makes me any better but I do feel clearer-headed now that I have actually put some effort into my epistemic structure. It pains me to realize how little thought people put into something so basic to the human experience. TD, Apparently the bible says we have no excuse so my addled brain must be too broke to see God all around us: http://www.christian-thinktank.com/hnohear.html Quote:The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities -- his eternal power and divine nature -- have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (Romans 1.19-20) By the way, I agree with you that to be a Christian one has to have been exposed to missionaries. If that were not the case, then God would have a stronger case than he currently does. For example if missionaries arrived somewhere in the deep dark places of the world and started talking about the gospel and the tribesman were all like, "Hey let me stop you there, we already know about Jesus! We're Mormons! some o' them people in 'other lands' that are mentioned in the bible!" it would mean that the message is actually from God and not just a bunch of crap made up to convince other people that society is good and should operate under the strict dictates of <insert law here>. Even if billions of people believe something is true, it can still be wrong. I want a world where the notion of a god is completely non existent. I'm something of an idealist, and understand this will never happen. My biggest problem with my fellow atheist is the pessimism and negative thinking/behaving. How are we going to help our friends and family out of their irrational beliefs if we ourselves seem plagued by our disbeleif? Its about setting an example. It is about showing the world how fulfilling it is to be free from religion, not how negative and caloused it appears to leave us. Hey, welcome to the forums, TD! You'll get along just fine! Oh, I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine... TimeDivider, meet Andrew Ryan. Andrew Ryan, meet TimeDivider. I'm sure you'll get along just fine here. |
