Scientologists also have such "technology" that they hold to be useful in and of themselves, irregardless of whether or not their magical explanation is factually accurate. They actually call it "religious technology", and have an "Office of Religious Technology. ORT".
@ Bgood, what teachings do you find so useful, what use did you find for them? Why do I seem to be capable of achieving those goals without employing any knowledge gained from your fairy?
@Abra...you aren't? You are the guy arguing that science hasn't "ruled out" magic...correct? You must absolutely know something I don't, something powerful and difficult to comprehend, lol.
"Magic does not exist" is not an outlandish statement, it is a factually accurate statement (as has been explained, and expanded upon). For all scientists know the moon may be made out of cheese that appears to be a mineral only to us (your little asides continue to amaze me). Science has ruled out anything that has ever been described as spiritual or magical, your attempts to redefine either of these things to exclude the items that formed the definition is unconvincing (as per your argument attempting to reduce karma to cause and effect, specifically causes and effects that can be demonstrated by science, a "mechanism of life").
I'm not in the habit of just giving anyone their fairytales. If you want a rabbit to talk or a tortoise to win a race you're going to have to have something to show for them. Redefinition and weasel phrases don't meet my bar for evidence.
(I do understand that you are most likely being sincere, that this sort of rhetoric and these sort of phrases or concepts are the things that convinced you. They are simply unconvincing to me.)

I'm sorry, but having been involved and highly educated in the sciences myself for my entire working life (I'm retired now) I am far too aware of how little science actually knows about the state of reality.
So just because they have "rule things out" using their extremely limited and incomplete knowledge of reality doesn't impress me as much as it apparently impresses you.
In fact, for every one thing they have ruled out, they have probably opened ten unsolved mysteries that they can't rule out. They've only just discovered the existence of Dark Energy and Dark Matter. They are seriously talking about the possibility that the universe actually has 11 dimensions instead of just 4. Seven of them they know absolutely nothing about yet.
If that situation is true, then let's see, that's 7 dimension they don't yet know anything about and only 4 dimensions that they think they understand. Hmmm? At best they could have only ruled out 4/11 of reality. That leaves 7/11 left for spiritual activity.
And that's just talking about physical dimensions.
How about undetected quantum fields and other unseen particles?
Scientist strongly believe that there exists a Higgs Field. They are spending billions of dollars searching for it. They haven't been able to detect it, yet they are confident that it must exist because it will make their theories pretty.
Well duh? If they are so sure that a totally undetectable Higgs field exists and can have such a profound effect on physical reality (i.e. give everything mass and inertia), then who's to say that maybe there don't also exist "Spiritual Fields" that are completely undetectable yet can have an influence on physical reality too!
If anything, our current investigation into the nature of reality is actually revealing to us that even the most bizarre things we can imagine may very well exist all around us yet be totally undetectable.
Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Higgs Fields, multiple hidden physical dimensions.
What's next? Parallel universes right next door?
It's anyone's guess. Zeus could suddenly pop into existence at the LHC out of the Zeus Field for all we know.
We have no clue what's coming next.
Science may seem to have ruled out the obvious simple stuff, but in the meantime they've been opening up new doors to all sorts of hidden and mysterious things.
I'm waiting for them to discover the Moon Goddess Particle.
I know she's out there somewhere in the fields of cosmic consciousness.

Do you have some thing to add to this picture which is beyond our "extremely limited knowledge of reality"? Something "spiritual" that has not been described or investigated? Unknown does not mean magical, undetectable does not mean magical.
Perhaps you could name your spiritual force the Moon Goddess Particle and be done with it?

You're right I could. But then it would be like science and it wouldn't be spiritual anymore.
I'd end up like secular scientists spending billions of dollars and research looking for her and not being able to find her.
She might then become as illusive as supersymmetry.

Wow.. there are alot of teachings that I find very useful in my life. Meditation being first and foremost. This brings my attention to the present moment. Emptiness is being able to let go of resentments and bad feelings. Just the overall essence of the Buddhadharma repeatedly comes to mind and it inspires me to love others, especially in times of conflict or strife. It is such a deep philosophy that probably takes an entire lifetime to fully appreciate and comprehend in any rational sense. The gentlteness and humility of the Dalai Lama is also a great inspiration for me. I would love to see him in person someday. I missed out on the chance to see him in Wash D.C. this past summer because of my lame job. LOL I don't take it all so seriously. I have fun with it. It is more laid back and flexible than some "hardliners" would portray it in some Asian countries like Korea. I'm sure it can be distorted to suit political ends in such Communist countries where the litercy rate is like 20%, very sad, but all in all, Buddhism (particularly Zen) is a very liberal and wide open enterprise for any philosophical temperment. I incorporate yoga, taoism and any other Eastern wisdom say from Confuscious to benefit my own mind/body/spirit. The main point of Buddhism is to have fun with it and let it enrich your life. Don't get too serious about it. If you do then you are stifling it's potentialities.
Rhythym, if you can find the same happiness and inspiration in secular atheism, then good for you and so be it. There is nothing wrong with that. I personally just need a little more fantasy!  Plus we could always get our own personalized "fix" of fantasy on television or the movies nowadays anyway can't we??? If you play video games or watch great films like "Lord if the Rings" on occassion, perhaps these are like modern substitutes for inspiration and imagination in an organized religion. Or perhaps not. (Just a psychological proposition)
