This. What's it called in your language? Also what gender is it?
Apparently it's Mårran in Swedish and Groke in English. Both come from a murmuring or growling sound.

In Polish it's Buka. It doesn't mean anything. And it's supposedly a female.

Yeah... Moomins are not very popular in English-speaking countries. I've never heard a single mention of the books, or cartoons in British or American media. It's mainly a Northern-Europe-thing, I think. And they appear to be big in Japan, which is unsurprising, since the design of the characters seems to fit right in with manga/anime.
