10 And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.
11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.

Here's how other translations work out the passage:

"For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:" (the KJV of the OP)

"He tells us everything over and over again, a line at a time and in such simple words!” (TLB)

"For it is:
Do this, do that,
a rule for this, a rule for that[a];
a little here, a little there.” (NIV)

“For He says,
‘[i]Order on order, order on order,
Line on line, line on line,
A little here, a little there.’” (NASB)

It reads to me as though unintelligible babble is intentional; the question is, "Who can understand the speech [of Isaiah]?"

Judging by the way subsequent readers treated this book, the answer appears to be: no one.

The question was about Isaiah, not Mark.

what do you Jesus is talking about? Precept must be upon precept remember? Read again.
Quote:Mark 4
11 And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:
12 That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them
Now compare it to this
Quote:Isaiah 28
9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
Quote:Isaiah 28
13 But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

Repeating yourself isn't necessary. I'm fully aware that you do not know how to read the Bible properly, which is to say in the context each section was written, and not as later Jewish or Christian readers recycled them for their specific agendas. Mark may very well have Isaiah in mind. That doesn't mean he's concerned with the correct understanding of Isaiah.

I was going to say great minds think alike, but getting dibs on a punchline and impertinence would be crossing the line Confused

"Impertinence"? Hell, no, I'm glad I can get a good thought off on occasion ... even if it does get scooped. [Image: 2jcdc36_th.jpg]

That which was written became a judgment.
A good lesson for America.

I found the original verse easier to understand than this.

It's just that "great" isn't a word I'd use to describe my mind, you see, so I have to resort to stealing other people's ideas not to come off as a complete idiot... Angel
